Introduction

Consistency

A design must be consistent with its environment, which means that no conflicts between the designed object and its environment arise in use.

Complexity

Consistency can only be maintained if the design has sufficient degrees of freedom to cope with the variations in its working environment. We can reduce the probability of design failure, but at a cost, which must be matched to the cost of failure.
