Differential equation

[Hazewinkel, differential equation] [Borowski, differential equation]

A differential equation is a equation involving derivatives of a function. To solve a differential equation requires integration is to produce a function whose derivatives obey the original equation.

One of the simplest and most widely applicable differntial equations in physics is the equation of simple harmonic motion. Simple harmonic motion occurs when the force on a displaced mass is directly proportional to the displacement from a given point and towards that point.
