Quantum mechanics has nothing to say about 'absolute

[page 178]

energies' only relative energies and frequencies. At the two state stage of a Universe (ie an isolated system) we can specify neither period nor frequency, nor that periods are of any particular 'interval'. It is only when we introduce communication that relative frequency becomes relevant and measures the coupling between systems. All we can say (or want to say) is that in a closed system potential and kinetic energy are equal and opposite so their sum is zero.

Fermi vs Bose has something to do with space since a) we need relativity to explain it and b) we cannot get two fermi particles n one spatial location. They create space in some way.

We have created energy by creating distinct states and a frequent exchange of action between the, but in a situation where the set of base states is complete and there is no possibility of error.

We take the next step by introducing a user who uses te pure energy layer (in effect the cosmic clock) to do its won thing, restricting communicable energy levels by something like the eigenvalue equation, at the same time introducing the possibility of error, the need for error correction, finite velocity, space and memory (although we might say memory already exists in the isolated system insofar as it has distinct states).

What this seems to mean is that the interpretative postulates of quantum mechanics are already quantum field theory, since relativity is indifferent to the actual

[page 179]

value of c, the 'velocity of light'.

One can put any amount of energy into a Boson state but a fermion state can only carry the energy equivalent of the rest mass of the fermion in its local frame.

Bosons are 'isolated' particles since they can all go onto one state and it does not worry them. Fermions are communicating states (they exchange bosons) and so although they are 'identical' they nevertheless refuse to enter into the same state which is characterized by spin, energy or momentum.

The archetypical communication system is the quantum harmonic oscillator. Feynman: 'Suppose that for each light (boson) frequency little omega there are a certain number N of atoms which have two energy states separated by the energy delta E = h bar little omega' page 4-8. Feynman

These atoms are sources (or sinks) of radiation (messages) characterized by delta E.

'Let Ng and Ne be the average number of atoms in the ground and excited states: then in thermal equilibrium at the temperature T, we have from statistical mechanics that

Ne / Ng = exp (- delta E / kT) = exp (- h bar. little omega / kT )

This is a distribution induced by an 'energy barrier' [potential difference]/

. . .

[page 180]

A 'fulfilled' potential, like a met desire, is no longer a potential (or desire), satisfaction, satiation. So, in a harmonic oscillator the top of the swing has potential but no kinetic, the bottom kinetic but no (relatively speaking) potential.

We speak of gravitational, electrical etc potential, but the fundamental potential is the number potential which relates first to entropy: numbers always increase (by the development of meaning through ordered ( = position significant) notation. Or should we say numbers always tend to increase and will do so if a mechanism is available to allow it. This mechanism is fundamentally communication (we here think).

Equations of continuity describe incompressible (meaningless) flow.

Time and energy appear to be the fundamental resource. They are the basic resources for the network model. Resources such as entropy and entanglement are users of these fundamentals. Their fundamentality is further suggested by Fermat's principle of least time and De Maupertuis principle of least action and the success of the Lagrangian approach in physics, L = KE - PE is stationary. Zero point energy: 'The energy possessed by a quantum mechanical system as a result of the uncertainty principle even when it is in its lowest energy state, eg the difference between the lowest energy level of a harmonic oscillator and the minimum in the potential well. Quantum mechanics presents two faces to us, one representing the dynamics of an isolated or free system, the other describing the messages we receive from such a system when we communicate with it. We define a Universe as a system with nothing outside, in other words an isolated system. The big U Universe is guaranteed to be such a system, but subsystems of the Universe may be Universes in their won right as long as they remain closed. Such systems are bound, like mathematics, only be self consistency, and so we expect their interiors to be isomorphic to mathematics as represented in this project by transfinite recursive function theory, which is beyond one to one representation by any finite system , including the network of real observations.

We propose that the energy of the Universe is the sum of the ground state (zero point) energies of its transfinite set of states, balanced by the potential energy represented by thee states. We capture this idea in a transfinite version of the quantum harmonic oscillator which for want of a name I have called (since 1992) the Hilbert Oscillator.

The simplest analogue of the HO is the simple

[page 182]

harmonic oscillator approximately represented by a frictionless pendulum which continually converts its energy (with the held of the gravitational field) from potential to kinetic and back again.

The HO makes and breaks symmetry. The creation of symmetry is knowledge, potential and stasis. The breaking of symmetry is growth, creation and kinesis (dynamis) motion. All these things may be understood as birth and death as different levels of complexity, so the HO gives us a framework comparable to quantum field theory. Our first use of the HO is then to describe general relativity and its localization as special relativity.

The world is slowly moving out of the long period where the rich and powerful have lived as parasites on the poor and spun them a lot of improbable yarns to justify their greed. All this is built into the Roman Catholic Church, a paradise of denial and double think and spin.

In truth the Roman Catholic Church is probably no worse than the communist party, a cigarette company or the government of any nation, getting along any way it can by bullshitting the peasants. But there is also another kind of organization in the world, one that genuinely benefits from giving good service to its clients, and the theology company wants to be like that.

The Hilbert oscillator models the dynamics of the transfinite network. it operates under two constraints, normalization and computability.

[page 183]

Normalization is a classical (real, observable) constraint placed on the complex world of quantum mechanics.

A machine infinity is a quantity or symbol which cannot be resolved by the machine in question.

The hardware of the Universe is blind to order, counting only the cardinal numbers of the structures is underlies. Ordering comes from memory and higher layers of the network.

The Hamiltonian comprises both kinetic and potential terms and since it is normalized, the total expectation value when we consider all the basis states must be one. We can therefore conclude that maintaining normalization at all times implies that [the rate of change of the integral over the probabilities of all states is zero]. There must also be (if the total energy of the Universe is zero) some measure that gives us H(Universe) = 0 although we allow local fluctuation.

Every real state is a state which can communicate with the world and therefore we attribute energy to it, the zero point energy, h bar little omega / 2.

Not only is the energy of the physical layer 0, but this is true of every layer. We have a problem here, since quantum mechanics binds energy to

[page 184]

probability, a probability of 1 implies an energy of 1.

We might answer this by saying that the messages are static, that is outside time, they have a structure (momentum) but they do not evolve, the whole point of message and memory. A message is in fact a pure spacelike structure with no time (dynamics) of its own but moving through time with 4-momentum.

The natural religion project (TNRP): This project is motivated by my feeling that the far of death has led us to place ourselves in a very awkward position. We are very efficient killers, (we, like all organisms, have to kill to live) but the world's dominant religion, Christianity, denies the reality of death.

This site is devoted to a careful examination of death (and its inverse, birth). We begin in the foundations of the world with quantum field theory, the physics of birth and death in the particle world. Physicists call this annihilation and creation, and their jargon includes creation and annihilation operators for each species in the particle zoo. Physicists see the whole world process as different particles popping in and out of existence at different places and times.

Birth and death occur at every level, from fundamental particles on up. . . . natural religion accepts them without the denial inherent in Christianity.

Christians do not really die because their mortal bodies are vivified by immortal souls, created directly and specially by God at some point in our

[page 185]

gestation.

While a theoretical possibility, this idea has very dark consequences for most of us.

Since time immemorial the rich have lived at the expense of the poor. This is made possible by their power, which has two sources, military and theological. Military power speaks for itself. One can use military power by killing or threatening to kill people and taking their stuff.

Theological power comes from convincing people from birth that the world works in a particular way, and that you had better toe the line and fit in if you want a happy life. Because Christianity postulates life after death, it can take this sanction even further, promising an eternity of pain or an eternity of bliss to those who disobey or obey its orders.

Why believe this story? First, since it took over as religious provider to the Roman Empire, Christianity has has the military power. Secondly, in line with the idea of the divine right of the powerful, Christianity claims to be in direct contact with the God who created this setup, and must therefore be believed.

[page 186]

Of course this emperor has no clothes.

On the other hand, natural religion promises garments of unrivalled beauty. We accept that the world is divine, so that theology can be a science like any other. Every experience is an experience of god and we are all players in the divine Universe.

The purpose of this project is to explain this theological ansatz and expose its practical consequences.

A pure spacelike (eternal) object has momentum but no [better: potential but not kinetic] energy and we may assign to it a probability of 1 because it is eternal (even though it is just an element of a dynamic Universe. So we see the Universe as bound by texts (eternal static points) all of which are in their locality laws of nature, unchanging while they exist, like this text, which may be stored electronically well after this notebook has died and rotted away.

Logically (we might say) a Universe full of discrete objects with probability 1 has probability (cardinality) 0. [probability might be re normalized at each layer in the network]

Momentum p = h/i del, ie the structure we see as we move through space at constant time, in other words formally.

We say something is real if we can hold a conversation with it, or a physicist would say, prepare and observe it.

[page 187]

Energy is pure timelike, momentum is pure spacelike.

A space may have as many different metrics as ways of looking at itself, ie permutations. Some metrics are unique to themselves. Others have enough in common with eachother [degeneracy] to move beyond the local (in effect to become famous) ie become a symmetry common to many locations.

Energy E = -h/i d / dt.

The natural religion project is an essay about death, taxes, life and profits. Or maybe life, love, death and taxes.

Summarize the whole project in 500 words.

Historically, theology is one of the many areas of life that have been corrupted by power. Now we want the truth in power.

Thermodynamically, life is a very improbable state - there are a lot of more probable states associated with death. The miracle of life is that it exists. The fear of life is that it is so precarious and the state of fear is the opposite of the state of peace. To bring peace we must take away fear. To take away fear we need to implement security and to implement security we need to study communication networks.

Network security, trade, trust and war.

[page 190]

Administration = software engineering.

How certain need I be? Only certain that the antecedent state, in this case Catholicism, is wrong. If it is wrong, anything less wrong is better.

In the world of trade, one is entitled to blow one's own trumpet.

The Theology Company is a conscious corporation. We are concerned with the total impact of our operations.

PROFIT MOTIVE vs AESTHETIC MOTIVE

PROFIT - ENERGY - TIME

AESTHETICS - MOMENTUM - SPACE

To invest without hope of profit is to act against the principle of least action. The question may be, however, profit at which layer? Obviously the user layer. Every user at whatever level wants to gain the resources to maintain and perhaps grow itself. This is the dynamic reality behind the stationary states that we observe. Our guess is that it exists as every level. Or maybe quantum is different because it is complete, whereas continuous can never be complete because there are not sufficient quantum resources to complete it.

[page 191]

At the entrepreneurial level, we are not so much concerned with quality as survival, although quality is certainly a factor in survival. But appearance also counts, so effective marketing can bring a low quality product to drive a high quality product out of the market, at least among average consumers if not among professionals, although the two classes of customer may be converging.

APPEARANCE - ENERGY ? = ALPHABET
REALITY - MOMENTUM ? = WORD

The cardinal of appearances so exceeds that of realities that we can be confident that the majority of appearances are not real = consistent with reality = durable = memories = spaces = momenta.

Every business is based on some physical implementation of an idea: from shoe polish to space vehicles. The physical foundation of theology is peerage of resources, ie we all have an equal share. When we extend this peerage to all species,m it also implies reducing our footprint to very near zero.

PEERAGE = fundamental assumption of classical probability theory. Kolmogorov We establish a measure and map a unit of measure to a unit of probability. This measure (in quantum mechanics) may be action (spin), energy or 4-momentum.

PEACE: War is caused by scarcity (perceived ==> greed).

[page 192]

Life is difficult and evil abounds for all living creatures. Our special position among the animals is that we are conscious of hardship and need to both explain and eliminate it, at least for ourselves.

Christianity explains our existence by the Creation, our difficulties by the Fall and provides a happy ending through the Redemption, an eternal life of bliss for the good and pain for the bad. Central to this theory (and fatal to its scientific credibility) is a denial of death.
