Back to the physics story, pp 234, 241.

Modern physics began with Planck’s discovery in 1900 that radiation is emitted in discrete quanta which Einstein realized in 1905 were the real particles which explains the photoelectric effect and which were ultimately identified as photons. There followed about

[page 261a]

30 years of laboratory and theoretical work which culminated in 1932 with the publication of John Von Neumann’s Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics. Von Neumann notes that in 1925 “it was clear beyond doubt that all elementary processes . . . obey the ‘discontinuous’ laws of quanta”.

“What was fundamentally of greater significance was that the general opinion in theoretical physics had accepted the idea that the principle of continuity (natura non facit saltus) prevailing in the perceived macroscopic world is merely simulated by an averaging process in a world which in truth ia discontinuous in its very nature. John von Neumann (2018): Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics

Meanwhile, in the 19th century background mathematicians had been devoting enormous effort, through the study of Fourier transformations of functions, to perfecting the ideas of continuity and the differential calculus (“the method of fluxions”) invented by Isaac Newton, This led, among many other things, to Cantor’s invention of transfinite numbers and the emergence of mathematical paradoxes which greatly stressed the discipline. The source of the paradoxes was diagnosed to be the ambiguities of natural language and led to a progrsm to express mathamatics in pure logic which began with Whitehead and Russell’s Principia Mathematica (1910). Newton (1736, 2018): Treatise of the Method of Fluxions and Infinite Series, With its Application to the Geometry of Curve Lines. By Sir Isaac Newton: Translated From the Latin Original not yet Published, Alfred North Whitehead & Bertrand Russell (1903): Principia Mathematica

David Hilbert joined this quest and proposed that ideally mathematics would be consistent, complete and computable. In 1932 Kurt Gödel destroyed Hilbert’s idea by showing, using the logical approach of Whitehead and Russell, that mathematics is incomplete.

[page 261b]

Alan Turing followed in 1936 with a proof that mathematics in incomputable. One valuable but problematic product of nineteenth century mathematics was Cantor’s idea of transfinite numbers which shows the logical foundation of the increase of entropy based on permutation and combination.

The third major ingredients in modern physics are Einstein’s special and general theories of relativity which embedded the notions of determinism and continuous fields into physics.

Amazon book bio:

I was born in 1945 a few days before my father, a newly graduated doctor then in the Australian Army, went to Bougainville to repel a possible Japanese invasion. He was liberated from this terrible task by the destruction of two Japanses cities with nuclear weapons. As I grew up, he suggested I might like to be a nuclear physicist.

My mother, also a doctor, was a devout Catholic. I had a Catholic education and, as seemed natural at the time, I entered the Australian province of the Dominican order to be trained as a priest as soon as I turned 18.

The Second Vatican Council was under way at the time and there was a call for ideas. Many Dominican theologians were advisors to the Council. I had by then fallen in love with the work of Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274). The European universities were then becoming aware of the Greek classics that had been preserved in the eastern Roman Empire and studied extensively by Muslim theologians. Aquinas, working from Latin translations of Arabic commentaries and Aristotle's Greek works spent his lifetime adapting Christian belief to Aristotle's science.

Aristotle is by now about 2400 years out of date. I suggested to my superiors that the Council could repeat Aquinas's project, using modern science in the place of Aristotle. Since science is based on observation, this plan implied that I thought that God is visible. This was (and is) a heresy in the Catholic Church which demands complete infallibe control of its visions of the imaginary God it inherited from ancient Egypt via the Hebrew Bible. I was expelled from the Order and went back to real life. Now, sixty years later, I have published my idea in Cognitive Cosmogenesis, a systematic integration of physics and theology. I offer my book as a foundation for a new global scientific theology. Jeffrey Nicholls (2025): Cognitive Cosmogenesis: A systematic unification of physics and theology

‘Invasion day’ when the empire met the indigenous population of Australia and nearly eliminated them with imported disease, exploitation, repression and murder often motivated by a religious desire to convert pagans to the true faith and the belief that white people were superior to black. A combination of ancient and painful interfaces that have very slowly evolved to some sort of understanding. Unfortunately religious beliefs have blinded us to the reality of the divine world and there are centuries of work ahead of us to learn to be at home in the world rather than [imagining ourselves as] temporary pilgrims [on trial] in a damaged word destined for better things in a next life, an idea deeply printed into the minds of kings 5000 years ago, and implicit in many modern and widespread theologies. My mission: to contribute to changing this mental state in everyone in the world by stressing the ontological role of music and pleasure implicit in quantum mechanics, my friend. My morning prqyer, directly contrary to my life in the Dominican Order. Dominican Order - Wikipedia

Gravitation is the ultimate community of code free communication.

As the pendulum swings, the mass energy of the swinging bob rises and falls as the inverse of its potential energy. If I perform physical act my mass does not change as I transform the chemical potential energy in my body to the kinetic energy of my motion. Because gravitation is continuous this identity operates at all scales down to fractions of quanta represented by lower frequencies, E = hf

I have given up on the old 4T disc drive and installed new SSD, the loss of data seems minimal and once I have adequate backups I will empty the old computer, reconstruct the new one in it, put the reconstructed version back in the new one and get the footnoting working again and settle back to work.

1 quantum of action = 1 logical action = 1 NOT, or is it 1 NOTNOT to come back to the beginning? Zero sum bifurcation implies conservation of energy , kinetic forward in time, potential backwards = anti-forward, equivalent to time going backwards? And what does all this say about spinors, which must, like action, also be coupled to logic?

Problem: does mass of fermion = energy of photon Δ mass e = Δ mass γ?

The pendulum (does it explain the origin of mass in the universe through the often quoted zero sum bifurcation of the initial symmetry? Maybe no. We like the energy and the mass of the universe to stay forever zero but the formation of structure arises from bifurcation into potential which acts as the inverse of kinetic, a very philosophical question)

Do I need to do a special section about bifurcation and entropy increase? Yes, otherwise how do we get from eternal (ie static) to 10100 quantum operations per second? Universe - Wikipedia

Differentiation from field theory:

1. Hilbert [space] creates itself in the singularity rather than been written in Minkowski [a result of fixed point theorems].

[page 265]

QFT assumes fields are primordial rather like Minkowski space.

2. Energy comes from gravitation not from fluctuations which activate fields.

3. Hilbert space is in the fundamental symmetry so it is not subject to Lorentz transformation

4. Minkowski space is created by bosons and fermions and not vice versa. This accounts for the pixellation of Minkowski space. The increase in entropy is achieved by the random creation of bases for Hilbert space and since the formal system is static without energy we can expect these states to be eternal like the persons of the Trinity, and given fact that the mappings of this singularity onto itself may be computable, we can expect it to have a countable infinity of dimensions. [These] are naturally superposed and quantum theory may select a certain set of hermitian operators which may correspond to the set of elementary particles [this idea is consistent with the observation that no matter how we collide particles with one another we always get the same set of elementary particles among the debris].

5. Instead of using a set of established fields as QFT does, [we take evolution back to the beginning] and allow QM to make its own particles. Some will be selected and reproduce and others will not.

6. Then we introduce the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics made stable by the zero sum bifurcation which is our source of energy modelled on the pendulum. [This equivalence of potential and kinetic energy always guarantees a Lagrangian stable at T - V equals zero.] [See page 264]

7. The available number of [different atomic elements] is constrained by stable structures and we might suggest a similar reason for the set of elementary particles.

[page 266]

8. Fermions and bosons are born in pairs, one a person, the other a language. The energy necessary for this is bespoken at the time of formation, ie an electron and an associated photon. [The electron has a fixed structural energy, photons may have any energy at all, and if sufficiently energetic may decay into fermion, obeying some species of zero sum bifurcation for the conservation of charge etc.

Where is this essay going? Working from justice at the elementary level via symmetry with respect to complexity to justice at every level.

Foundations of Physics article. Quantum field theory is a comedy of errors. Should have written this in the blurb.

A genocidal comedy of errors.

I am very happy with my book but I despair somewhat. It is the result of 60 years spent drilling and blasting through hard intellectul rock and I will be very surprised if I ever meet anyone who understands the path I have taken.

To get a new idea we have to randomize because Laplace’s deterministic demon never comes up with anything that is not logically implied by the past.

[page 67]

An important question, if money is analogous to energy, is why inflation is continuous between 2-3% pa even in well managed economies, rather than zero as we would expect if it were precisely analogous to energy; and what has this go to do with the relationship between energy and justice? [maybe inflation is a residual injustice, inverse to the [capitalist] payment of interest. Piketty says somewhere that 3% is a pretty stable long term return on investment which may reflect the productivity of capital. Thomas Piketty (2014): Capital in the Twenty-First Century]

The amount of energy traded in a zero sum bifurcation is a function of the ‘force’ involved in the operation. So the gravitational energy involved in a swinging pendulum is relatively small at the elementary level compared to an electrodynamic or strong force oscillator, and in the case of the strong force it appears to be comparable to the masses of the [fermi] particles which is in some way related to the phenomenon of confinement.

l4l_e03_physical_theology: The purpose of this articles is to create a connection between physics and theology with a view to proposing a scientific theology. We proceed in two steps:

First we establish a connection between Shannon’s mathematical theory of communication and von Neumann’s equivalence between matrix and wave mechanic in his book [built around unitarity]. John von Neumann (2018): Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics

Second we explore the transmission of Aristotle’s proto-science via Muslim theologians in the old Eastern Roman Empire to the new Universities in Europe where Thomas Aquinas and his contemporaries adapted Christian doctrine to Aristotelian philosophy.

7 = 3: Dismissal of QFT by moving QM to initial singularity where it can exercise its full creative power without being crippled by Lorentz transformations, coupled to discussion of QM as the symmetry and creating the ‘need’ for Lorentz transformation since (?) light (massless bosons) moves outside (= prior to) space.

I have the ideas but the words to express them clearly and succinctly are hard to come by and I can use mathematics to Frontiers. The fundamental variation (7 above) is the relocation of QM to the initial singularity, built on Augustine’s Trinity [a version of fixed point theory].

Hypothetical fictions are made ‘scientifiic’ by people observing their own mental states which are just as powerful to them as the instrumental observations of Galileo. So we describe Galileo in terms of a paradigm changes in human understanding which failed in Lonergan but comes to fruition in physical theology

[page 270

where the symbolic transition from dream to reality is symbolized by the quantum transition from invisible complexity to real eigenvalues derived from real eigenfunctions represented by characteristic equations with real roots which symbolize the zero sum complexification. Bernard Lonergan (1992): Insight: A Study of Human Understanding (Collected Works of Bernard Lonergan : Volume 3)

So in my theological saga I need to mention Lonergan’s method in theology and his treatise Insight and my conclusion that the transcendent world is effectively empty [and identical to God and the initial singularity] although it is the source of the random complex fantasies that make us tick.

Descartes observation that clear and distinct ideas are the foundation of knowledge is analogous to the function of hermitian operators in producing clear ands distinct eigenfunctions.

So Foundation essay begins with this story at the interface between myth and reality, fiction and science in a completely [cognitive] cosmogenic world. These dreams make me very happy but my disappointment arises because nobody listens, although the greatest break in my life arose when the Dominican Order and Lawrence Peter (Patrick?) Fitzgerald listened to me closely enough to throw me out.

Things continue to go well but slowly and my book has laid down a pad upon which to build an extended version of the essay I am trying to write now, which I would like to finish by the end of February to begin seriously marketing my book with a copy to the Nobel Committee, a la Trump, ride roughly over everything because one is entitled, the most powerful human trait, leading to royalty.

The interface between dream and reality is described very succinctly by QM, so we begin essay with quantum mechanics as an epistemological paradigm.

Emphasize the role of theology and religion in giving meaning to life for a large fraction of the population.

We may think of the initial singularity as a venue for the construction [and materialization] of Hilbert’s formal mathematics. Richard Zach (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy): Hilbert's Program

Superposition is essentially a bosonic operation which cannot be done with fermions. Nevertheless DNA achieves superposition by splitting into single strands which can then link with new partners. Is the information in fermions a zero sum bifurcation and the exclusion principle a ‘closure’ of this bifurcation by the addition of the inverse wave function which yield a probability of zero for the superposition, ie exclusion? The bifurcation into spin up and spin down creates a mathematical model for exclusion, but is there some reality behind this, ie what is the reality coupled to the mathematical abstraction?

Our simple model goes well:

1. Singularity
2. Augustine, reflection, fixed point theory, real forms
3. Superposition, self adjoint operators, real forms (characteristic polynomial)
4. Zero sum bifurcation of gravitation, particles, fermion and boson
5. Minkowski space metric, mass shell, built on underlyingsace-time free quantum theory, ie emergence of particles → Minkowski → Lorentz.

von Neumann (2018), John, and Nicholas A. Wheeler (editor), Robert T Beyer (translator), Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics, Princeton University Press 2018 ' Quantum mechanics was still in its infancy in 1932 when the young John von Neumann, who would go on to become one of the greatest mathematicians of the twentieth century, published Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics--a revolutionary book that for the first time provided a rigorous mathematical framework for the new science. Robert Beyer's 1955 English translation, which von Neumann reviewed and approved, is cited more frequently today than ever before. But its many treasures and insights were too often obscured by the limitations of the way the text and equations were set on the page. In this new edition of this classic work, mathematical physicist Nicholas Wheeler has completely reset the book in TeX, making the text and equations far easier to read. He has also corrected a handful of typographic errors, revised some sentences for clarity and readability, provided an index for the first time, and added prefatory remarks drawn from the writings of Léon Van Hove and Freeman Dyson. The result brings new life to an essential work in theoretical physics and mathematics.'

Alfred North Whitehead & Bertrand Russell (1903), Principia Mathematica, Preface.' THE mathematical treatment of the principles of mathematics, which is the subject of the present work, has arisen from the conjunction of two different studies, both in the main very modern. On the one hand we have the work of analysts and geometers, in the way of formulating and systematising their axioms, and the work of Cantor and others on such matters as the theory of aggregates. On the other hand we have symbolic logic, which, after a necessary period of growth, has now, thanks to Peano and his followers, acquired the technical adaptability and the logical comprehensiveness that are essential to a mathematical instrument for dealing with what have hitherto been the beginnings of mathematics. From the combination of these two studies two results emerge, namely (1) that what were formerly taken, tacitly or explicitly, as axioms, are either unnecessary or demonstrable; (2) that the same methods by which supposed axioms are demonstrated will give valuable results in regions, such as infinite number, which had formerly been regarded as inaccessible to human knowledge. Hence the scope of mathematics is enlarged both by the addition of new subjects and by a backward extension into provinces hitherto abandoned to philosophy.' back

Erkai Hei, Hao Qiu & Willie J. G. M. Peijnenburg, A global imperative to remediate Ukraine’s soils, ' The ongoing hostilities that began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 have led to the widespread degradation of Ukraine’s chernozem soils, which represent nearly one quarter of the world’s most fertile black soils. Chernozem soils’ stable aggregates, high organic carbon content, and biological complexity reflect millennia of formation under specific climatic and ecological conditions. Once disrupted, these functions are difficult to fully recover. Scientifically guided restoration of this soil system must be a core pillar of postwar reconstruction.
Modern warfare profoundly alters soil systems. In Ukraine, largescale physical disturbance from trenching, fortifications, and vehicle traffic is compounded by chemical contamination from explosives, fuels, propellants, and heavy metals, as well as the pervasive presence of landmines and unexploded ordnance As a result, the severity and type of damage vary substantially over short distances, a complexity that hinders conventional land assessment and remediation efforts. Large-scale hydrological shocks, exemplified by the Kakhovka Dam breach, have increased salinization, exacerbated erosion, and altered groundwater dynamics across agricultural floodplains. back

Lisa Visentin (2026_01_27), What China’s kill line obsession exposes about its own anxieties, ' For weeks, China’s online media ecosystem has been obsessed with tales of misery from America’s broken healthcare system. Video-sharing platforms and online message boards have been swamped with discussions about America’s “kill line” – a concept taken from Chinese gaming culture to describe the point at which a player needs just one more blow to wipe them out. [. . .]
What’s interesting is how the topic became a proxy for the perceived virtues of China’s socialist model and the moral bankruptcy of America’s capitalist system. In holding up a mirror to Chinese society, the online debate showcased a shifting perception in how many Chinese citizens see themselves compared with the country against which they have long benchmarked their quality of life.
[. . .] These sentiments, expressed across tens of thousands of comments, are grounded in a justified pride at China’s rapid economic transformation over three decades, which has been genuinely remarkable.
Almost 800 million people have been lifted out of poverty, China’s educated and prosperous middle class has burgeoned, and the country is on par with, or poised to eclipse, the US in a range of high-tech industries.
But not everyone bought this version. As some commentators argued, before the government censors kicked in, this fixation with American inequality was a false panacea, one that appealed to schadenfreude and nationalistic chest-beating, and obscured honest introspection about China’s own challenges.
“You gain not the truth, but a cheap, illusory sense of superiority,” wrote Li Yuchen, a legal blogger, in an essay that has now been scrubbed from the Chinese internet.
“You think you’ve won, won big.”
He argued that systemic inequality had also been built into China’s hukou (household registration) system, which classifies each citizen as either an urban or rural resident and limits the state and welfare services they can access to their designated region, thereby constraining their freedom of movement and their social mobility.
“At the moment of your birth, [it] determines what kind of education, medical care and social security resources you can enjoy in the next few decades. This line cuts off the possibility of ‘being born equal’,” Li wrote. “These are our ‘kill lines’.”
Among the most affected by the hukou system are the hundreds of millions of Chinese migrant workers – the rural poor – who move to cities in search of low-paid labouring or factory jobs, grinding out an existence on the fringes with almost no safety net.
In my travels through China over the past 18 months, people have been surprisingly frank about the tough economic times they are enduring. The fallout from China’s devastating real estate market collapse has rippled across society. Property prices are in multi-year decline, hammering middle-class wealth. For migrant workers, jobs have become more scarce as construction activity has halted, while state employees have seen wages stagnate for years as local governments drown in debt.' back

Mike McIntire (2026_01_24), Genetic Data From Over 20,000 U.S. Children Misused for ‘Race Science’, ' Genetic researchers were seeking children for an ambitious, federally funded project to track brain development — a study that they told families could yield invaluable discoveries about DNA’s impact on behavior and disease.
They also promised that the children’s sensitive data would be closely guarded in the decade-long study, which got underway in 2015. Promotional materials included a cartoon of a Black child saying it felt good knowing that “scientists are taking steps to keep my information safe.”
The scientists did not keep it safe.
A group of fringe researchers thwarted safeguards at the National Institutes of Health and gained access to data from thousands of children. The researchers have used it to produce at least 16 papers purporting to find biological evidence for differences in intelligence between races, ranking ethnicities by I.Q. scores and suggesting Black people earn less because they are not very smart.
Mainstream geneticists have rejected their work as biased and unscientific. Yet by relying on genetic and other personal data from the prominent project, known as the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study, the researchers gave their theories an air of analytical rigor. [. . .]
Their papers have provided fodder for racist posts on social media and white nationalist message boards that have been viewed millions of times. Some of the papers are cited by A.I. bots like ChatGPT and Grok in response to queries about race and intelligence. On the social media platform X, Grok has referred users to the research more than two dozen times this month alone. “It’s evil,” said Dr. Terry L. These assistants are helpful, polite – and almost always default to female.
Their names also carry gendered connotations. For example, Apple’s Siri – a Scandinavian feminine name – means “beautiful woman who leads you to victory”.
Meanwhile, when IBM’s Watson for Oncology launched in 2015 to help doctors process medical data, it was given a male voice. The message is clear: women serve and men instruct.
This is not harmless branding – it’s a design choice that reinforces existing stereotypes about the roles women and men play in society.

It calls for a formalization of all of mathematics in axiomatic form, together with a proof that this axiomatization of mathematics is consistent. The consistency proof itself was to be carried out using only what Hilbert called “finitary” methods. The special epistemological character of finitary reasoning then yields the required justification of classical mathematics.' back
